VLSU was established in 2004 and consisted of 12 laboratories in the FVM, UPM namely Bacteriology, Biologics, Haematology & Clinical Biochemistry, Histopathology, Molecular Biology, Parasitology, Serology, Post Mortem, Public Health, Virology, Animal Resource Unit and Physiology. Physiology laboratory opted out from the VLSU in 2009 and Animal Resource Unit in 2020.
At present VLSU consists of 9 laboratories, namely Bacteriology (Molecular Biology laboratory merged with Bacteriology laboratory as one), Clinical Pathology (formerly known as Haematology & Clinical Biochemistry), Histopathology, Parasitology, Post Mortem, Public Health, Virology (combined of Virology I &II and Virology III (formerly known as Biologics) since 2021), Aquatic Animal Health (joined since 2012), and Pipette Calibration (established since 2013). These laboratories provide routine diagnostic services. Some laboratories also provide research services.
VLSU is headed by the Head of Department of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnostics. The head is assisted by the VLSU coordinator, VLSU manager and all laboratory coordinators. VLSU Quality Management System (LQMS) is chaired by the Chairman of Veterinary Laboratory Services Unit and managed by the Quality Manager who is assisted by a Deputy Quality Manager.
