SERDANG, 14 August – University Veterinary Hospital (UVH), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FPV), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), organised the “Bengkel Pengendalian dan Pengurusan IV Catheter & IV Fluid”. The workshop aimed to enhance staff knowledge and skills in fluid therapy management and the safe, systematic placement of IV catheters according to patients’ clinical needs.

The workshop emphasised the importance of fluid therapy, preparation of the IV catheter insertion site, selection of appropriate sites, and methods for monitoring fluid administration to patients. Participants were also exposed to equipment preparation, patient restraint techniques, site hygiene, and safety aspects to ensure that procedures were carried out systematically while minimising the risk of complications throughout treatment.

The workshop was conducted simultaneously across seven groups at seven different locations around the faculty’s academic buildings and UVH building. This approach enabled participants to engage in more focused training sessions covering equipment preparation, IV catheter placement, and fluid therapy management through practical activities under the guidance of facilitators at each designated location.

In addition, participants were introduced to methods for calculating fluid requirements based on maintenance needs, dehydration deficits, and ongoing fluid losses. The training also covered methods for manually determining drip rates and selecting appropriate macro-drip and micro-drip sets. Participants were further exposed to methods of recording and monitoring patients’ clinical signs throughout continuous fluid administration.

Overall, the workshop provided a learning platform that integrated theoretical knowledge with practical training in IV catheter management and fluid therapy. The training is expected to enhance staff confidence in performing procedures, improve the accuracy of patient monitoring, and support the delivery of quality clinical services at UVH.
