SERDANG, 28 July – The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FPV), in collaboration with the Centre for Management of Waqf, Zakat and Infaq (WAZAN), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), organised the Webinar Kebajikan Haiwan@VET, UPM Siri 7/2026 titled " Jangan Diam! Cara Melaporkan Kezaliman terhadap Haiwan" The webinar was delivered by Dr. Hajah Ani Yardi, Senior Assistant Director of the Animal Welfare Section, Veterinary Regulatory Division, Department of Veterinary Services (DVS).

The webinar aimed to raise public awareness of the responsibility to report cases of animal neglect and cruelty ethically in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act 2015 (Act 772). Participants were introduced to the five fundamental animal welfare needs, offences under Act 772, and the penalties that may be imposed on offenders.

According to Dr. Hajah Ani Yardi, "Awareness begins with action. Remaining silent in the face of animal cruelty is a form of neglect, while every report that is complete, accurate, and supported by evidence can be the catalyst for justice." She also emphasised that the public plays a vital role as the eyes and ears of the authorities in combating animal cruelty.

Participants were also guided on how to submit complaints through the MyAnimalWelfare portal by providing complete information, including the identity of the alleged offender, the location and time of the incident, as well as photographic or video evidence. The session also highlighted the importance of complainant safety, ethical reporting, evidence integrity, and confidentiality throughout the investigation process.

The organisation of this webinar reflects UPM's commitment to strengthening public knowledge of animal welfare and promoting civic responsibility in combating animal cruelty. It is hoped that programmes such as this will encourage the public to report cases responsibly, thereby supporting law enforcement efforts and enhancing animal welfare standards in Malaysia.
