SERDANG, May 12 – The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FPV), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), through its Department of Veterinary Preclinical Sciences, successfully organised the “Unlocking the Future of Companion Animal Health: Seminar on the Role of Genetic Testing” at the FPV Auditorium, as part of the Knowledge Transfer Grant Scheme @ PTJ initiative.
The seminar brought together 100 participants, including veterinary practitioners and members of the public. It aimed to raise awareness of the crucial role of genetic testing in companion animal health and to foster a deeper understanding of emerging veterinary technologies.
Five academic experts from FPV delivered insightful presentations on a range of topics, including an introduction to genetic testing, animal welfare, ethical considerations, neurological disorders, and the application of precision oncology in pets. The speakers were Dr. Mohd Shahrom Salisi, Dr. Syamira Syazuana Zaini, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arifah Abdul Kadir, Prof. Dr. Noordin Mohamed Mustapha, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gayathri Thevi Selvarajah.
The seminar highlighted the practical applications of genetic technologies, particularly in the early detection of hereditary diseases, evidence-based treatment planning, and responsible breeding practices guided by accurate genetic data.
This initiative reflects FPV UPM’s continued commitment to advancing knowledge transfer between the university and the wider community, while empowering veterinary professionals to embrace innovation in addressing today’s animal health challenges.
