SERDANG, 16 July – The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FPV), in collaboration with the Centre for Management of Waqf, Zakat and Infaq (WAZAN), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), organised the Webinar Kebajikan Haiwan@VET, UPM Siri 6/2026 titled " Sihat Si Bulus, Selamat Si Poket " on 10 July 2026. The webinar was delivered by Dr. Wirdatul Nazira Zahri, Operations Planning Officer at the University Veterinary Hospital, FPV.
The webinar aimed to raise public awareness of the importance of preventive healthcare for companion animals before diseases occur. Participants were also informed about several factors contributing to the rising cost of veterinary treatment, including advances in medical technology, increasing medication costs, and delays in seeking veterinary care.
Throughout the session, participants were introduced to diseases that often require costly treatment, including diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, tick fever, pyometra, parvovirus infection, and cancer. The speaker also shared preventive measures such as vaccination, routine health check-ups, tick control, neutering, and providing a balanced diet.
According to Dr. Wirdatul Nazira Zahri, “Love is not measured by our willingness to pay expensive veterinary bills, but by the steps we take to prevent our pets from becoming ill.” She also emphasised that the cost of disease prevention and early detection is always lower than the cost of treatment.
The organisation of this webinar reflects UPM's commitment to strengthening public knowledge on animal healthcare and welfare. Programmes such as this are expected to help pet owners make more informed decisions, reduce the risk of disease, and improve the overall well-being of their companion animals.
