SERDANG, 31 May – Recognising the urgent challenges posed by African Swine Fever (ASF), the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FPV) at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), through its Department of Veterinary Clinical Studies, recently hosted the "Seminar on Dealing with African Swine Fever (ASF) in Malaysia". Held at the FPV Auditorium, the event convened leading regional experts to foster collaborative solutions and safeguard the swine industry from the devastating impacts of the ASF virus.

The seminar served as a crucial platform to enhance awareness, readiness, and coordinated response efforts among a diverse group of stakeholders, including veterinary professionals, pig farmers, researchers, and policymakers. Key discussions focused on effective disease prevention strategies, research in preventive measures and the implementation of robust biosecurity practices across farm operations.

Over 150 participants, comprising academics, veterinary students, and industry stakeholders, attended the seminar. The comprehensive programme featured six distinguished speakers: Prof. Dr. Roongroje Thanawongnuwech, Dr. Sarah Dadang Abdullah, Dr. Cheong Yew Hoong, Dr. Wasu Kasimani, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ooi Peck Toung, and Dr. Frankie Lau Pick Ping. These experts provided invaluable insights into ASF management across Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, offering a regional perspective on the challenges and solutions.

Discussions delved into current ASF status updates, practical biosecurity challenges at the farm level, and the critical importance of robust surveillance in preventing future outbreaks. Participants actively engaged with speakers during dynamic knowledge-sharing sessions, bridging the gap between scientific understanding and practical field application

The seminar also received a visit from YB Lau Weng San, the 12th Speaker of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, who took time to attend in the afternoon to better understand the ongoing challenges and impact of ASF in Selangor. His presence reflected the importance of awareness and support in managing animal health crises.

This impactful seminar strengthens academia-industry collaboration. It also highlights the importance of advancing integrated and sustainable efforts aimed at repopulating and protecting the region’s vital swine industry.
