      Laboratory diagnostics for veterinary pathogens have traditionally relied on methods detecting pathogen by culture or antibodies, using a variety of techniques such as neutralisation, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, agar gel immunodiffusion and complement fixation.
      Recently, veterinary diagnosticians have incorporate new molecular techniques such as the polymerase chain reaction and Western blot, and improved older techniques through the use of recombinant antigens and monoclonal antibodies. Although conventional diagnostic assays are still used routinely, new molecular techniques have broadened the scope of veterinary diagnostics and provide powerful new tools that enable the rapid and specific diagnosis of animal diseases.
      The ultimate aim of the research program is to establish diagnostics methods with quality control through effective isolation and rapid characterization of pathogens through utilization of molecular tools in complement with rapid conventional methods for fast and reliable detection of pathogens in infected animals for improvement of diagnosis of animal diseases.

Research Highlights:

      • Technological skills of researchers with multidisciplinary background for conducting molecular methods and rapid conventional methods research towards production of diagnostic tools which give an impact to the society.

      • Multi-disciplines approach against animal disease and immunology evaluation assay in-vitro and in-vivo.

      • Accompanied by established research groups and competent researchers with proven achievements, together with over 500 technical papers, several patents, national and international of publications as well as research awardees.

      • Availability of suitable and conducive basic research infrastructure, equipment as well as facilities including Molecular Suite (PCR, Real-Time PCR, Image documentation), Proteomic Suite (2D-electrophoresis set, Image documentation, Western Blot), Domestic Animal Disease Suite (Conventional disease detection system, Microscopy unit, Staining apparatus, sterilization unit), Immunology Suite (ELISA reader and software) and Experimental Unit (experimental house with facilities of biosafety level 3 (BSL-3).

      • Availability of research funding to initiate Diagnostic Technology for Animal Diseases research projects for procurements of research materials and human capitals from various sources involving amount around RM 5 million.
