SERDANG, 20 May – The University Veterinary Hospital (UVH), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FPV), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) organised the programme “A Practical Clinical Seminar on Parasite Control and Pruritic Skin Diseases in Dogs and Cats” at the Bilik Jemaah, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UPM, as an initiative to strengthen understanding and clinical competency in the management of skin diseases and parasite control in companion animals. The seminar also supported the implementation of functional competency training encouraged to enhance the professionalism of the workforce.

The seminar emphasised preventive measures against parasites in companion animals, the diagnosis of pruritic skin diseases among dogs and cats, as well as appropriate treatment approaches for cases involving allergies and infections. The seminar also highlighted the importance of comprehensive parasite control practices to ensure more effective, safe, and animal welfare-oriented treatment.

The programme involved the participation of 60 attendees comprising academic officers, veterinary officers, assistant veterinary officers, veterinary assistants, pharmacy officers, and assistant pharmacy officers from various responsibility centres within UPM, including UPM Sarawak (UPMS). This cross-faculty and cross-department participation reflected the active involvement of staff, particularly those under Scheme G (Veterinary), in strengthening professional competency and sharing best practices in veterinary services.

The seminar content included sharing sessions on parasite control, skin disease management, the application of modern therapeutic approaches such as monoclonal antibodies and Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitors in the management of atopic dermatitis, as well as clinical experience sharing based on real-life situations in veterinary facilities. These sessions provided practical and relevant exposure in enhancing the efficiency of companion animal dermatology case management.

The programme was also conducted in collaboration with Pahang Pharmacy Sdn. Bhd. as an industry partner supporting the organisation of the seminar and strengthening collaborative networks between industry and academic institutions. Through this programme, UVH continues to demonstrate its commitment to reinforcing its role as a teaching hospital and clinical referral centre that emphasises ethical, professional, and knowledge- and technology-based veterinary practices.
