SERDANG, 14 January – The Universiti Veterinary Hospital (UVH), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FPV), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) recently received an official visit from a delegation of Zoo Johor as part of a benchmarking programme on animal examination and treatment facilities. The visit reflects recognition of UVH’s capability as a veterinary referral hospital with comprehensive facilities and an established animal healthcare management system.

The visit was conducted following an official request from Zoo Johor to obtain reference and guidance for the planning and development of an animal treatment centre, particularly in the management of wildlife health. This initiative forms part of Zoo Johor’s continuous efforts to upgrade existing facilities and enhance the efficiency of veterinary treatment services in line with current needs.

The Zoo Johor delegation was led by Tuan Haji Muhamad Syahrizat bin Alwee, Secretary of the Local Government Division, Johor, and comprised administrative officers, veterinary officers, as well as representatives from relevant agencies and consultancy firms involved in the management and development of Zoo Johor. A total of 19 delegates participated in the visit, demonstrating Zoo Johor’s strong commitment towards improving animal examination and treatment facilities.

Throughout the visit, the delegation focused on several key aspects as references, including the layout and facilities of UVH in the development of an animal treatment centre. The delegation also reviewed the types of veterinary treatments provided, the range of equipment and clinical facilities available, particularly for wildlife handling, as well as the essential equipment required for a veterinary clinic.

In addition, the delegation was briefed on staff management involved in carrying out animal treatment procedures, covering aspects such as task distribution, workflow, and compliance with safety and animal welfare standards. These briefings provided a comprehensive overview of the clinical management approach practised at UVH to ensure treatments are conducted systematically and effectively.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and UVH welcomed the visit and shared experiences and best practices in veterinary hospital management, particularly in handling complex cases involving various animal species. The visit also served as an important platform for information exchange and strengthening professional networks between academic institutions and zoo management.

Overall, the official visit is expected to assist Zoo Johor in planning the development of a more structured, functional, and standard-compliant animal treatment centre. At the same time, it further reinforces UVH’s role as a veterinary referral hospital of choice for external institutions seeking benchmarking and professional expertise.
