SERDANG, 29 June – The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FPV), in collaboration with the Centre for Waqf, Zakat and Endowment (WAZAN), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), organised the menganjurkan Webinar Kebajikan Haiwan@VET, UPM Siri 5/2026 entitled “Sains di Sebalik Mangkuk Makanan” on 19 June 2026. The webinar was delivered by Prof. Dr. Hasliza Abu Hassim, Professor at FPV and Deputy Director of the Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS), UPM.

The programme aimed to enhance public understanding of the importance of proper pet nutrition based on the principles of nutritional science. The session emphasised that food selection should not be based solely on quantity, but should also consider nutrient composition, dietary balance, and the physiological requirements of animals according to their age and health status.

Throughout the session, participants were introduced to the concept of a complete and balanced diet that provides essential nutrients, including proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and water in appropriate proportions. The discussion also highlighted the effects of nutrient deficiencies and excesses on animal health, as well as the importance of understanding the information displayed on pet food labels before making purchasing decisions.

According to the speaker, “A full food bowl does not necessarily meet an animal’s nutritional requirements, while a smaller portion may contain a higher concentration of essential nutrients and provide a more complete diet.” She further explained that proper nutrition plays a vital role in supporting an animal’s growth, health, and overall well-being throughout its life. She concluded the session with the key message: “A Small Bowl, A Big Impact on Life.”

Through programmes such as this, UPM remains committed to strengthening public awareness of science-based animal nutrition. Initiatives of this nature are expected to help pet owners make more informed decisions when selecting pet food while promoting healthier feeding practices that contribute to the long-term health and welfare of companion animals.
