Faculty of Veterinary Medicine currently offers postgraduate programme in the field of veterinary and animal sciences. Post-graduate research is the mainstay of Faculty research activities. Research in the Faculty focusses on the advancement in areas beyond the borders of veterinary and animal sciences current knowledge in disease diagnosis, medicine and animal production.


Postgraduate programmes in the Faculty that began in 1979 is managed by UPM Graduate Studies Committee, a subcommittee of the University Senate. This committee is responsible for student admission, appointment of supervisors, and thesis examination. The office of Deputy Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research of the Faculty serves as the secretariat for this Committee.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine offers four (4) graduate programmes:

i) Graduate programme through laboratory and clinical practices and taught courses

  • Master in Veterinary Medicine (MVM) - This porgramme is currently offered only to local applicants or DVM UPM graduates.

 

ii) Graduate programme through research

 

OBJECTIVES

The post-graduate programme at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine are offered
with the following objectives:

  • to provide opportunities for further education in the chosen specialisation
  • to provide training in independent scientific research and investigation
  • to develop sense of curiosity in academic and scholastic research.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

  • Candidate must have a Master degree with thesis in an appropriate field
  • Acceptance into the programme is subject to approval by School of Graduates and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UPM

 

MASTER OF SCIENCE AND MASTER OF VETERINARY SCIENCE

  • Candidate must have a Bachelor degree (with honours), or DVM or Bachelor of Science degree in related field from UPM or any academic institution recognised by UPM university and have achieved a minimum CGPA of 3.00
  • Candidate without basic requirements may apply, however, acceptance is upon approval by the School of Graduate Studies and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UPM or;
  • Candidate in the final semester of a Bachelor degree programme in the field of veterinary, animal, or health science or human medicine or other related fields with good academic standing throughout the study programme may be considered for admission, subject to current CGPA or equivalent or other requirement as stipulated from time to time
  • Candidate has fulfilled the language requirement as stipulated by UPM

 

MASTER OF VETERINARY MEDICINE

  • Candidate must have a Bachelor degree (with honours), or DVM or Bachelor of Science degree in related field from UPM or any academic institution recognised by UPM and have achieved a CGPA) of 3.00
  • Candidate with a Bachelor degree in Veterinary Medicine that is not equivalent to the UPM DVM degree and with a minimum of one-year working experience in a veterinary clinical or veterinary laboratory practice
  • Pass either face-to-face, video-conference, or telephone interview

 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS (International Students Only)

For direct admission, an international candidate must pass the following tests with stated minimum passing marks:

i) TOEFL Written test (Academic version): 550 points
ii) IELTS (Academic Exercise): Band 6.0
iii) TOEFL Internet test (Academic version): 79-80
iv) TOEFL Computer test (Academic version): 213
vi) CIEP: Level 109


STUDENT STATUS 

Full-time

Student will devote full-time on the graduate study and his/her learning shall focus on work and assignments associated the academic programme. Other requirements
are:

  • Registered in a minimum of nine (9) course- or thesis-work credits per semester
  • An International student, scholarship holder, or a graduate research assistant 

 

Part-time

  • A student is fully responsible for his/her graduate study and focus part of his/her learning on works associated with his/her academic programme.
  • Student must be registered in a minimum of six (6) course- or thesis-work credits per semester.

POSTGRADUATE COURSES

The post-graduate courses are numbered according to the 5000 or 6000 series.

 

SUPERVISORY COMMITTEE

A supervisory committee shall be appointed by the Faculty for each candidate. The committee comprising of experts in their respective fields shall be responsible for the coordination of the candidate’s programme of study and monitoring of their progress.

 

COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION

  • All PhD candidate must pass the comprehensive examination
  • The examination can be taken within the first five (5) semesters of the programme
  • The examination will be conducted by the supervisory committee as written and oral examinations
  • The candidate is allowed two (2) attempts only to pass the examination. Upon failure after two attempts, the student is deemed to have failed and his/her PhD candidacy terminated

 

GRADUATION

The requirements for graduation are:

  • obtain a minimum CGPA of 3.00 for post-graduate courses taken
  • Submit a thesis that is acceptable and passed by the Examination committee
  • Fullfil all residency requirements and pay all registration fees 

 

MASTER IN VETERINARY MEDICINE

The Master in Veterinary Medicine (MVM) programme is specially designed for graduates in Veterinary science. The specialisation of the programme is either in clinical veterinary or laboratory veterinary practice. The programme is a full-time intensive, of duration of either 12 or 24 month, and conducted with lectures, practicals, special topic assignments, seminars, and a research project.

A candidate must fulfil the residency requirement of not less than two (2) semesters duration and pass a minimum of 41 credits of courses.

 

Objectives

At the end of the programme candidate should:

  • to produce competent consultant in relevant clinical and laboratory.
  • to produce leaders that are referred to by the industry and community in clinical and laboratory practice.
  • to produce specialists recognised by the Malaysian College of Veterinary Specialist (MCVS).

 

Programme Tenure

The 24-month programme begins on first day of the first semester and ends on the last day of at the fourth semester.

 

Module A (Veterinary Clinical Practice)

This module is designed for veterinarians, currently in veterinary clinical practice, wishing to improve and advance their clinical skills. The choice of field of study is from the following:

  • Small animal medicine
  • Small animal surgery
  • Anaesthesiology
  • Ruminant medicine
  • Equine medicine
  • Swine medicine
  • Avian medicine
  • Theriogenology
  • Diagnostic imaging
  • Aquatic animal medicine

 

Module B (Veterinary Laboratory Practice)

This module is designed for veterinarians, currently in veterinary diagnostic laboratory practice, wishing to improve and advance their laboratory diagnostic skills.

The choice of field of study is from the following:

  • Bacteriology
  • Clinical Pathology
  • Parasitology
  • Pathology
  • Virology
  • Laboratory animal medicine
